The growing trend in kit form skylights is creating a huge get out clause for those supplying them as the problem will lie with the fitters of the skylight, rather than the supplier if anything goes wrong.

After 15 years of continued research and development and gaining a fist full of accreditations along the way, including the coveted Kitemark, we categorically know that the manufacture and assembly of a flat roof skylight should be left to qualified engineers who are not subcontracted in any way.

If there were a way to provide a kit form skylight, we would have been the first to know and certainly would be shouting about it from the rooftops. It is simply not possible, however attractive it may be, to guarantee the integrity of a skylight when it is assembled by a third party who does not work for the supplying company, or have their best interests at heart. It’s all about quality control.

We install 1000s of skylights a year and assemble some of the larger ones on site. Many believe that it should be possible for anyone to assemble a skylight with a glazing background, avoiding the expense of paying for a Sunsquare engineer. Unfortunately, this is simply not the case.

We ensure that anyone who assembles onsite has above a years worth of factory glazing experience, and never below. It is not worth the risk to client or company. Think of a skylight as a high end car. You would not expect this to come in kit form and to perform and be as safe in the same way as it would should trained mechanics and factories put it together for you. The assembly of a skylight is obviously integral to its safety and performance.

Whilst the cost may not suit all, a rooflight is an investment for many years to come and ours have a warranty to match. We heartily urge people to avoid falling into the trap of losing a warranty for the cost of a qualified engineer.
