What is an Upstand?
An Upstand is an integral element of the functionality and fit of a skylight. They are raised frames that create enough height between the roof and the skylight and also enough pitch to protect against weather.
Why do I need an Upstand for my skylight?
Building regulations state that a skylight must protrude by a minimum of 150mm above the roof and have a minimum pitch of 3 degrees. The Upstand achieves this by acting as the fixture that keeps the glazed unit from coming into contact with the surface of the roof.
As well as being an important factor in terms of building regulations, Upstands provide resilience against rain and standing water. The pitch allows water to run off the roof and protects it should the skylight need to be repaired or replaced. They also maximise thermal performance and air tightness.
