Consumers anxious about hiring tradespeople
to carry out home improvements

The national economy could be missing out on as much as £6 billion a year in lost consumer spending on home improvements, with 20 per cent of consumers finding reasons to delay their building or home improvement work due to anxieties about using tradespeople.

Almost a quarter of consumers surveyed by the Federation of Master Builders fear the final cost of the work will be much higher than the initial quote, while one-in-seven worry the finished work won’t be up to standard.

Brian Berry, chief executive, FMB, said: “The anxiety around hiring tradespeople is of grave concern to us, not simply in terms of the reputation of our industry, but also the pressing impact on small construction firms and the UK economy.

“What many people don’t realise is that the building trade has moved with the times – there are some fantastic tradespeople out there, many of whom have high standards of customer service and the best in modern technology, from digital testimonials to full 3D imaging.”
