    Disposable income recovering
    among UK homeowners

arrow Back to news 17th March 2016

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate that homeowners across the UK have more disposable income compared with previous years, allowing consumers to loosen their belts when it comes to spending and making home improvements.

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate that homeowners across the UK have more disposable income compared with previous years, allowing consumers to loosen their belts when it comes to spending and making home improvements.

The median average disposable income per household in the UK for 2014-15 was £25,700 – £1,500 higher than the recent low of 2012-13, according to the ONS.

Household incomes were naturally hurt by the global financial crisis but with average earnings now rising faster than inflation and employment rates still on the rise it bodes well for the home improvement industry.

Jeremy Brett, managing director, the Consumer Protection Association (CPA), said: “An increase in employment and higher wages has pushed living standards back above where they were before the financial crisis, meaning that not all consumers are still tightening their belts when it comes to spending.

“With more disposable income, some homeowners will be looking to spend this on products and services usually seen as luxury in times of austerity, such as new windows and doors or fitting a new kitchen or bathroom.

“Let’s not forget that an Englishman’s home is his castle.”

However, it’s still more important than ever that homeowners spend what disposable income they do have very wisely. Choosing the very safest, most aesthetically pleasing and energy efficient products for the home is the sensible option.

If you’ve always wanted to encourage more natural light into your living space but you’ve only now got the budget to do so, it’s vital that you get the job done properly, futureproofed for years to come.

At Sunsquare we take our role as market leaders in the design and manufacture of flat roof skylights very seriously. We’re the UK’s only flat rooflight manufacturer to obtain the BSI Kitemark for a rooflight.

Each rooflight we sell has undergone the most rigorous testing for air permeability, weather tightness and wind resistance, so you can be sure that your Sunsquare skylight will survive the elements and provide you with a timeless architectural statement for your home.

You can see our world-leading range at Grand Designs Live London 2016 next month. We’re exhibiting in the Grand Build at Stand B225.
