Self-build industry growing
6.25% year-on-year

New figures suggest that the self-build and custom build industry across the UK is booming, with a third successive year of growth, according to the Self & Custom Build Market Report.

At present, the self and the custom-build industry are expanding at 6.25% year-on-year, with the sector predicted to record 16,500 new housing completions by the turn of the next decade.

Within the Self & Custom Build Market Report, undertaken by information provider Homebuilding & Renovating, it states: “This three-year forecast implies an industry growth of 41 per cent an average industry value of £6 billion.

“This, says the report, reinforces the sector’s strategic role as a contributor to the Government’s housebuilding targets.”

The primary source of the report’s data was a recent survey of 500 self-builders who had either recently completed or were close to completing their project.

Jason Orme, one of the report’s contributors, said of the findings: “As a result of the market increase and other factors – not least the reluctance of speculative housebuilders to differ their standard offerings – suppliers of products and services are increasingly finding the self and custom build market an interesting opportunity.”

Another of the report’s contributors, Michael Holmes, believes the figures and analysis will help to “establish the shape of the self-build market” in the coming years, with a greater understanding of “why people build their own homes”.

“It will allow us and other members of the industry to better understand the motivations, hurdles and aspirations of self-builders themselves and to understand activity in the market, down to a level previously undiscovered in terms of product choices and spend,” added Holmes.
