Small house builders twice as
likely to have satisfied homeowners

A new report by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has found that homeowners are twice as likely to be ‘very satisfied’ with the build quality of their new property if it was overseen by a small and medium-sized (SME) house builder.

The FMB’s survey of satisfaction rates among new-build homeowners in the last five years found that more than twice as many people (36%) were ‘very satisfied’ with their new-build completed by an SME building firm, as opposed to 17% of people who were ‘very satisfied’ with their new-build completed by one of the UK’s top-20 large building firms.

Brian Berry, chief executive, FMB, commented on the “popular misconception” that the majority of new-build properties are poorer constructions than period homes.

“This research draws a clear distinction between what is being delivered by SMEs and what is being delivered by larger firms,” said Berry.

“For a small, local builder, reputation is everything. They will typically reside in the same community that they are building in and are therefore doubly motivated to deliver a high-quality product that the home buyer will love.

“Furthermore, SME building firms are more likely to work with a small team of broadly skilled tradespeople. For example, if an SME house builder only employs three bricklayers, they all need to have a wide range of skills and experience.

“If we are to improve the image of the house building sector, all house builders, large and small, need to put quality at the heart of every project.”
