Vast energy retrofit required to meet
    London's carbon reduction targets

arrow Back to news 23rd March 2016

A new energy plan released by the London Assembly says all non-domestic buildings in London will need to undergo serious retrofits by 2050 if the capital is to meet its carbon emissions reduction targets.

Its report, titled ‘Scenarios to 2050: London Energy Plan’, explores a host of different models to determine the energy needs of the capital over the next 30 years in order to reach the carbon emissions reduction targets.

The document outlines four potential scenarios, but only two of them suggest the measures needed if London is to meet its target to minimise CO2 emissions by 80 per cent compared to levels in 1990 by 2050.

Both scenarios rely heavily on reducing the city’s energy demand to significantly lower levels and 100 per cent of commercial building stock will need to undergo improvements that bring all buildings to 2013 building regulation levels.

That’s in addition to 90 per cent of residential properties being retrofitted with high-cost energy efficiency measures too.

Meeting the 2050 target also depends heavily on improved efficiency of appliances and lighting, which will need to have grown by 50 per cent and 80 per cent respectively.

At Sunsquare, many of our London-based clients are increasingly acknowledging the benefits of flat roof windows to encourage new levels of natural light into the property, thus reducing the need for artificial lighting.

Flat rooflights reduce demand for unsustainable energy, providing a natural lighting solution that does not produce any harmful emissions. Put simply, if you’re looking to ‘go green’ with your property, skylights are the perfect place to start.

In London especially, our entire product range is being utilised to transform homes and workplaces with abundant levels of natural light.

Our internal floorlights are particularly useful in allowing daylight to flood into darkened rooms below, such as subterranean areas like converted basements and cellars. Meanwhile our Aero roof access skylights tick all the boxes for those looking to not only transform living and work areas below with natural light but provide a point of access to a new roof terrace – perfect where floor space is at a premium.

Take a look at some of our recent projects to see what we’re capable of. Sunsquare will also be exhibiting its full range of BSI Kitemarked flat roof skylights at Grand Designs Live London 2016 next month. Come and meet our senior sales team throughout the show at Stand B225 in the Grand Build.

Lowest U-Values in the skylight industry

U-values are touted by companies as a selling point for their products. Until now, all skylight U-values are calculated in exactly the same was as a vertical window, which gives a false reading and misleads the client.
