Following a recommendation by an existing client, we were contacted by a customer seeking to replace her 1970s sliding rooflight with an alternative which was easier to open, more thermally efficient and less demanding for space on the property’s roof garden. However, because the stunning Victorian home featured a spiral staircase, a standard access rooflight with a single opening leaf would not offer the width or head clearance required when using the stairs to reach the roof.
An ideal solution found in the Aero Dual
Sunsquare’s Aero Dual skylight provided the ideal solution for our client, offering two electrically opening leaves hinged on opposite sides of the frame. Taking up only fractionally more space than the opening in the roof, this access rooflight is perfect for spiral and winder staircases when outdoor space needs to be maximised. In this instance our rooflight was made to suit an internal opening size of 2100 x 2250mm, but the Aero Dual can be specified to a maximum width of 2000m per leaf, fitting a maximum internal opening of 4.6 square metres.
Operated by an elegant glass-fronted switch, the Aero Dual’s fully synchronised 24V actuators are controlled by a convenient control box, with diagnostics capability, allowing the rooflight to open fully for unrestricted access and added ventilation. Sharing the inherent benefits of our BSI Kitemarked Aero skylights range, the opening leaves and base frame feature a double run of EDPM gaskets to ensure air-tightness and thermal efficiency.
Tamper-proof hinges with polymer bearings, along with the high-performance actuators, reduce maintenance requirements to occasionally cleaning the glass. Used in conjunction with our fully-insulated upstand, the Aero Dual also provides our customers with an extensive choice of glass specifications, suitable to exact requirements.
Aero Dual installation – the final verdict
The Aero Dual rooflight provided a cost-effective yet elegant alternative to an electric sliding rooflight for our newest customer, offering the added benefit of taking up less roof space.
Our client said: ‘The ease of operation has made our roof garden more accessible, and the extra space created provides us with a nice sun trap. We now spend more time on the roof garden than in our living room.
‘Sunsquare’s service was slick right from the initial contact through to the installation – the whole process was completed within 8 weeks.’
