A new client, based in London, longed for extra light to be brought into her modern open plan kitchen extension whilst minimising the impact on solar gain within the space. She turned to Sunsquare to make her dreams a reality with a number of SkyView and Aero Ventilation rooflights.
Accompanied by Design Note Consultants who specialise in rear extensions, Sunsquare looked at the available space within the extension which backed onto the stunning garden of this Victorian terrace house. It was decided that to truly optimise the light within the room, a combination of Skyview rooflights above the bi-fold doors and the dining room table would be the best way to create a light and airy space, whilst making the most out of the elongated shape leading you down to the beautiful south facing garden.
The client was mindful that by adding more glass to the extension, would mean additional maintenance and cleaning. So, it was decided that low maintenance glazing would be used to reduce the amount of times the rooflights required cleaning by a 50%.
Due to the extensions south facing position, SN70 Solar control glazing was also used to significantly reduce the transmission of solar heat through the glass, leaving the client with a cool and bright and versatile living space.
The clients extension was fitted with a range of different sized SkyView rooflights ranging from 600x1900mm, 1400x1400mm and a 800x1100mm by the doors, alongside a 1000x1000mm Aero Electric Vent rooflight for light and air circulation at the touch of a button over the kitchen.
This, combined with a 800x3400mm Skyview rooflight with enhanced specification glass to ensure there was no need for mullion bars which helped aid the overall look of the rooflight with a frameless view of the sky bringing the outside in. The longer rooflight works wonderfully to draw the eye towards the garden at the end of the extension, as well as flooding natural light over the dining room table which is the main hub of the home.
The client was absolutely delighted with the final outcome of her extension and th,e tremendous amount of natural light that now streams onto both the kitchen and dining area. We weren’t surprised to hear that her favourite part of the design was the oversized pane over the kitchen table.
‘Needless to say we LOVE the skylights. The one down the side return, in particular, is the stuff of dreams. Looks incredible.’
